It has been said that we are currently in the period of the ‘singer/song writer’. The internet has made it possible for thousands of songwriters to reach large audiences, often bypassing the necessity for recording deals and publishers to promote their music.

Many believe that this is the future of the music industry.

MUSIC AND LYRICS is a new Worcestershire Arts Education project that has been developed and piloted at Saint Augustine’s High School in Redditch. It is a platform that aims to develop the art and craft of song writing and to promote work through a variety of media channels. The project looks to bring together singers and musicians within a collaborative environment.

During the pilot scheme, 30 vocalists, guitarists, keyboard players and lyricists from years 9 to 13 have collaborated, approaching song writing from a variety of starting points; lyrics, melody, harmony or a groove. Collaboration has been facilitated through an online forum where students have been able to discuss lyrics, songs, chord progressions and have shared MP3s of works in progress. This work has then been brought together and developed during workshops.
